YEON-DU: Stacking the Streetscape

YEON-DU(連阧): Stacking the Streetscape

YEON-DU, meaning “to connect and rise steeply,” reinterprets Seongnae-dong, Seoul, Korea, through a clear architectural rule. Rather than creating a disruptive landmark, the project extracts the scales, boundaries, and pedestrian rhythms of the surrounding alleyways and reassembles them into a stacked-and-shifted vertical composition. In this way, the building extends the urban fabric upward as a Vertical Alley.

To avoid becoming a disconnected object, YEON-DU carefully reads the site’s sightlines, neighboring heights, and edge conditions within the neighborhood. The street’s horizontal rhythm is inherited through the principle of “YEON,” then shifted and lifted to produce the effect of “DU”—a steep surge upward. This logic is reinforced by concrete long bricks, whose fine horizontal grain echoes the rhythmic stacking of the overall mass, linking material and urban scale.

Rejecting ephemeral ornamentation, the project focuses on repeatable details and durable material strategies for long-term viability. The robust materiality of the concrete long bricks allows the building to age gracefully and settle into the neighborhood over time. The depth of the mass—setbacks and terraces created through stacking and shifting—serves both as a sculptural expression of upward continuity and as a practical way to modulate daylight and shade.

Ultimately, YEON-DU proposes a refined civic attitude, transforming the everyday streetscape into a new vertical civic form—a true Vertical Alley.
